About the Show

An Evening with the Macabre

Kevin Kopfstein, Master of the Macabre

Join master of the macabre, Scottish storyteller and magician Kevin Kopfstein as he steps out of the shadows with his assemblage of haunted and accursed relics from his eerie collection. These hauntiques are steeped in the whispers of the supernatural. Behold an 1800’s Vampire Hunting Kit, its instruments still thirsting for unholy blood. A Voodoo Doll, pulsing with ancient malevolence. A Cemetery Padlock, rusted with the secrets of the grave. And a child’s Haunted Doll, whose innocent eyes conceal unspeakable horrors. Their tales will pierce your soul. Spirits shall stir. The darkness shall answer. Steel your nerves. This is no sanctuary for the fainthearted!

Haunted is a unique interactive show where dark history meets storytelling and magic. All within the atmospheric venue of The Lost Dice, which comes complete with its own ghost!

Answers from the Beyond

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HAUNTED?
HAUNTED is a live ghost stories and magic show in the Adelaide CBD. Scottish storyteller and magician Kevin Kopfstein brings out objects from his collection of haunted and accursed relics, tells you the history attached to each one, and then strange things begin to happen in the room. It is part dark history, part storytelling and part magic, and it runs for about an hour. There is no gore and nothing jumps out at you. The unease is slower than that, and audiences tend to still be thinking about it on the drive home.
Where is HAUNTED held?
HAUNTED takes place at The Lost Dice, a three-storey board game café and bar at 111 King William Street, right in the middle of the Adelaide CBD. The venue has a restaurant, a bar, a games shop and a library of more than 650 board games, and it is said to have a resident ghost of its own. King William Street is on the tram line, so it is a short walk from most city stops, and there is metered street parking and several car parks nearby. There is more detail on our venue page.
When is HAUNTED on?
HAUNTED runs every Thursday from 8pm to 9pm at The Lost Dice, all year round. There is a show this week and a show every week, with no season break to work around. Doors open beforehand so you can settle in, and the show starts at 8pm sharp. If you have booked the Show & Meal Deal, arrive by 7pm so you have time to eat first. The room is dark once the show begins and latecomers are difficult to seat, so it is worth allowing a little more time than you think you need.
How much are tickets?
General admission is $39 and concession is $35. Groups of four or more pay $32 per person, and the discount applies automatically from the fourth ticket with no code to enter. Companion Card holders attend free. The Show & Meal Deal is $74 per person and bundles the show with a meal, a drink and the board games. Tickets are booked online through Humanitix. Seats are limited because the room is deliberately intimate, so booking ahead is sensible, particularly for a Thursday close to a public holiday or during Fringe season. See group bookings for larger parties.
How long is the show?
HAUNTED runs for about one hour, from 8pm to 9pm, with no interval. That is deliberate. The show is built to hold a single unbroken mood, and breaking it in the middle would undo most of the work. Most people arrive earlier to eat or play a game first, and the bar stays open afterwards, so the evening usually runs a good deal longer than the show itself. If you have booked the Show & Meal Deal, plan for around three hours in total from a 7pm arrival.
What is a “hauntique”?
A hauntique is one of Kevin Kopfstein’s haunted or accursed relics. The collection includes vampire hunting kits, voodoo dolls, cemetery padlocks and haunted dolls, and each piece comes with a history attached. Some were made for a supernatural purpose. Others were ordinary objects that acquired a reputation. The interesting part is rarely whether an object is genuinely haunted, but what it tells you about the people who owned it and were frightened of it. We wrote a longer piece on where objects like these come from.
Is HAUNTED suitable for children?
HAUNTED is best suited to adults and mature audiences who enjoy the eerie and the macabre. It relies on suspense, atmosphere and genuine history rather than gore, and nothing physically jumps out at the audience, but it is designed to leave people unsettled and it does exactly that. It is not a children’s Halloween activity. Teenagers who actively like this sort of thing generally cope well, but we would not recommend it for younger children. If you are unsure about a particular guest, send an enquiry and we will give you an honest answer.
What is included in the Show & Meal Deal?
The Show & Meal Deal is $74 per person. It includes your ticket to HAUNTED, a choice of burger or pizza, a drink (beer, house wine, house gin & tonic, or a mocktail), and access to The Lost Dice’s library of more than 650 board games. Arrive by 7pm so you have time to eat before the show starts at 8pm. It is the option most people book, because it turns a one-hour show into a full evening and reduces the whole night to a single booking rather than four separate decisions.
How do I book for a group or private event?
Groups of four or more pay $32 per person on standard tickets, applied automatically. For larger groups, work nights, birthdays or a private event of your own, send an enquiry with your rough numbers and preferred dates. Private bookings can often be arranged on nights other than Thursday, depending on availability. Kevin has performed at festivals and private events internationally for more than thirty years, so the show travels. Our group bookings page has the full detail, including how the meal deal works for larger parties.
