The man with the collection

Kevin Kopfstein

A Scottish storyteller, magician and paranormalist who has spent more than thirty years convincing audiences that the room has gone colder than it was a moment ago.

Who he is

Kevin Kopfstein is a Scottish storyteller and magician who has been performing for audiences around the world for over thirty years. He is an international festival veteran, and in Adelaide he is best known for HAUNTED, his weekly show of ghost stories, dark history and magic at The Lost Dice.

His speciality is a particular kind of unease. There is no gore in his work and very little that jumps out at you. What there is instead is an hour of careful, patient storytelling that leaves people checking over their shoulder on the walk back to the car.

The hauntiques

The centrepiece of Kevin's work is his collection of haunted and accursed relics, which he calls hauntiques. Vampire hunting kits. Voodoo dolls. Cemetery padlocks. Haunted dolls. Each one arrives on stage with a history attached, and he tells that history while strange things begin to happen in the room around you.

If you want the longer version of what a hauntique actually is, and where objects like these come from, we wrote about it in what is a hauntique.

On stage in Adelaide

HAUNTED sold out its season at Adelaide Fringe 2024, and Kevin has since taken versions of the show to Fringe World in Perth and back to Adelaide Fringe with HAUNTED 2.0: The Witching Hour, which draws on the 17th-century Scottish witch trials.

Between festival seasons he performs HAUNTED every Thursday night at The Lost Dice on King William Street, which makes it one of the few permanent ghost-story shows running in the Adelaide CBD.
